Call for Stories! Kids and Queers!
One of the problems with the lack of queer visibility in the world is that it’s really hard to find depictions of ourselves in movies and books and so on, but even worse is that kids have no queer characters to grow up with at all! This is one of the place homophobia can spring up from early on. After all, why should someone who’s gay be treated like a normal person if you’ve never seen anyone gay in a Disney movie, on Spongebob, or in your favorite fairy tales. Clearly it’s something weird unnatural, or else you would have heard of it before!
Well, I don’t work for Nickelodeon and Disney isn’t returning my calls, but I do run a blog! And stories can be written! What do you folks say? Who wants to have a week devoted to queers and kids? It can be queer parents, queer children, queer versions of fairy tales, whatever!
Personally though, what I’m really hoping for is to put together a collection of short stories that geared toward children and contain LGBT+ characters as the protagonists, or at least prominently. There are tons of kids out there who need to know that queer people exist, who should get to see queer characters. But that can’t happen unless the stories with those characters are written. I’ll write and put up my story in the next few days. Is anyone else willing to take up the challenge?
